From viale Toledo, an old cattle track, now paved, leads to an imposing complex consisting of 13 trulli. With over 11 meters in height, this old residence boasts the largest and highest trullo in the area, also known as Regina Grande della Selva (Great Queen of the Selva). The twelve trulli of different heights that “mushroom” around the Regina explain the name of the villa: Corte della Regina (The Queen’s Court). According to the certificates of the national archives of Lecce the construction began in late 1700. It was completed in three stages during 1869, as attested by a stone with the date carved on a slab (the typical stone of that time, “chianca”) of the pavement at the entrance of the Regina. In the Land Register of 1830, it is indicated that the owner of Corte della Regina was don Ferdinando Reale. During the early years of the XIX century, part of Corte della Regina was a church that hosted many catholic celebrations. In the front patio, kids used to play with fireworks that they bought from the famous workshop of Bernardino Ferrara, also known as U’ Zigarolle. Moreover, during the Italian Risorgimento, the Carbonari held secret meetings in the area of the Selva beacuse of its position and rich vegetation. Since the early 1900s and for over forty years the property passed to the family Lissona. For many years, the residence was also known as “hunting house” because the area of the Selva was considered a rich hunting area ever since the Counts Altavilla from Conversano (around the year 1050) controlled the area, and then when during the XIV century it became a feud of the Knights of Malta. Later on the property was divided among many heirs of the Lissona’s, some of which very indigent. On December 9th, 1947 a notary act certifies that the property was awarded by the Tiberino’s for 730 liras during an auction with the “system of the fire estinguishing of the virgin candle.” This method allowed bids up to 10 liras for each offer until the candle was lit up. The residence was then purchased by Dr. Alberto De Cambio in 1968, whose family currently owns Corte della Regina.
